The demographic shift towards an aging population is expected to double the number of people aged 55 and over in the next 30 years. This demographic change will have a significant impact on all aspects of domestic design, including kitchens. These individuals, often referred to as baby boomers and former yuppies, represent a generation that places importance on material comfort as they grow older.

Kitchen Design

When considering your kitchen design, it's crucial to carefully evaluate comfort and practicality. Share your thoughts and preferences with the designer, and be open to their suggestions if they offer sensible alternatives that can make your kitchen operations easier or more cost-effective. However, don't settle for a generic or "standard" kitchen design if it doesn't address the specific shortcomings you've experienced in your current kitchen.

Accessibility

Even individuals in good health during mid-life can find bending down challenging. Take a closer look at the height of your worktop, sink, and hob, and ensure they are set at the most suitable height for you. They don't necessarily have to be at the same level. Having an oven built into a tall cabinet allows for safer lifting of hot dishes, while hob guards can prevent pans from sliding to the floor.

Customizing cabinets to maximize comfort is essential. Opt for fully extendable drawers that provide easy access, and consider incorporating metal pull-outs in floor cupboards to minimize bending down. You may also prefer wall cabinets set at a lower height than the standard. Remember, if you can't comfortably reach the top shelf, it is positioned too high, regardless of what a salesperson may say. During your showroom visits, try out the knobs and handles on various cabinets to find the ones that offer a comfortable grip. Adequate lighting is another important aspect to insist upon, as working in your own shadow can be dangerous.

In summary, it is crucial not to make a kitchen purchase until you are confident that the design aligns with your current and future needs. Take the time to ensure the kitchen layout and features are appropriate and tailored to your specific requirements, providing both comfort and practicality for years to come.
